Endings are the saddest part...

These last few days have been a whirlwind of emotions and things to do. My school year is over and with that came the ending of so many things.  Saying goodbye to your friends and a place you called your second home after six years is a difficult thing to do...but this year has been different.  I don't think I ever fully felt like I was back at school after I returned from my maternity leave.  Of course I put in 100% effort ever day, but my heart and mind were with my new daughter and learning how to be a mother. Those were the things that were most important to me this year...not test scores or learning one more new way to analyze a reading assessment. Maybe that has made it a little bit easier to say goodbye...
We ended our school year with some fun activities- a walk to the neighborhood park.  I'm sure we were a sight to see.  All 100+ Kindergarten students holding hands, two by two, walking down a very busy street.  But we made it safely and enjoyed the hot sun beating down on us.  As we walked back we passed the Burger King across from our school. I heard a chorus of little voices begging me to stop.  "Are we going to Burger King now?"  "Mrs. Wolfe? Can we please stop and get a hamburger!?"  Haha :)
We began our last day of school with a lockdown, something that has unfortunately become very normal at my school.  I guess it was one last hurrah before sending us off into summer. My small friends came to school dressed in their Sunday best for their very much anticipated Kindergarten Graduation. We had been practicing and practicing for a couple of weeks so our songs would be perfect for our moms and dads...and they were. We always end with the song I'm Gonna Miss You and my classroom suddenly became filled with parents crying, wishing their little Kindergarteners would stay five for just a while longer.

My students were high on sugar and the feeling that summer is coming so we spent our last day of school calmly cleaning up the classroom and saying goodbye. I didn't tell them that I was moving away...I wanted to, but I couldn't find the words.  Every year I give my cloud talk during the last few minutes of school. I told my students that I was proud of them and that they are going to do great things in first grade.  We sang our goodbye song and when we got to the part that says we are thankful for our teachers I was swarmed by my class.  We held each other in a great big hug and I smiled at each of them trying not to let the tears escape my eyes...they are going to do great things, I can feel it.
The staff gathered outside as the buses drove off-it's tradition to wave goodbye to our students on the last day of school. Little arms poked out of the windows waving wildly at their teachers. And soon they were gone and it was quiet.

* * *

I spent the next few days packing up my classroom which was quite the job.  I never thought I have accumulated very much stuff, but teachers are notorious for keeping everything...you never know if you'll need that half eaten pencil! But it's finished.  My classroom is now empty, waiting for the next group of students to make their mark.

I was one of the last to leave on the teacher workday.  I couldn't make myself walk out the door for the last time.  I just stood in the middle of my room.

I finally walked over to my piano.  I placed my hands on the keys for the last time and played my clean up song, which is a pretty tune from the 1950's about why the birds are singing.  I thought about how many times I've played that song...

I closed the piano, picked up my last packed box, and quietly said goodbye.

Classroom Update

I've changed a whole lot around in my classroom for the start of this school year.  This will be my second year in this particular classroom, so I'm still trying to get a good feel of the space and how I can best use it.
When I'm decorating my room it usually takes me a long time and I do a lot of this...
then I'll magically get inspiration  :)
I decided to move my word wall from the white board to the ceiling which freed up some more space on the board.
Isn't this the cutest chair? My mom and I found this great little red chair at the flea market.  Students will use it when they're sharing their work.
My morning meeting board.  I moved the alphabet down to eye level for the kids, purchased a new calendar and job chart.  We'll keep track of the days of school by bundling straws and then using my 100 days caterpillar.  I drew the schedule last year...I based them off of some examples in the book Classroom Routines That Really Work for PreK and Kindergarten
I really love how my library is starting to take shape.  I built a tree out of paper and just added the fish tank, which will hold a few colorful guppies (thanks to my husband) I think I might want to add another tree on the other side of the bulletin board so it has more of a 'forest' feeling...what do you think?

Now I need to work on the other half of my room!

The first day of school is August 4th...can you believe it?! I think school should still start in September when you can start to smell fall in the air, not when the blacktop is melting from 100 degree heat on the playground.  Kindergarten is a little luckier because we start a week later...BUT STILL!

My last few days of summer are blurring into one another with naps and pool time.  In fact, the sun is calling my name now.  Hope everyone is having a great Monday!

A Little Progress

My mind is spinning right now with so many new ideas for my classroom.
This will be my fourth year teaching and every year my room has changed...but I'm okay with that.  I think it's nice to have a fresh start.
I think sometimes we get so bogged down with learning new curriculum and ever changing pacing guides, benchmarks, and standards, that we forget to make our rooms a place where our students can really thrive.  I think classroom environment has to be in place first and foremost...I mean we spend 8+ hours a day there!

Here's what I got done today!
Keep you posted as I get more done!

Spring a Ling

As I am typing this right now I can hear the birds chirping.

It makes me smile.

I think I even see one blade of green grass out the window.

This morning I walked out to find no frost on my car windows and the smell of fresh rain. Rain makes everything happier.

I even spruced up my classroom a bit for spring today...

When I was little my sister and I used to think Spring was such an "ugly" season. It would be warm outside, but everything was still dead.  I hated that. I think I'm over that now because Spring can not get here any sooner.

Awww the birds stopped chirping...they must have gotten some sense knocked into them that it is still very much winter and the clouds look like they have stupid snow in them.

I think I have Springitis.

Promethean Board

Once upon a time, teachers in the land of my school were supposed to get a Promethean Board installed over the summer. What is a Promethean Board you ask?  It is an interactive white board that makes you look like the most technologically advanced teacher on this planet. Click here. It is way cooler than a chalk board (what's that anyways?) or white board.

By fall we still didn't have our boards. Then after many delays we were told to prepare.  Our boards would be installed over Winter Break. Teachers probably ran into the school excited to see their Promethean Board installed after months and months of waiting (I know I did)...
hmmm I thought it was supposed to be a white board, not purple

oh wait! Here it is! sitting outside my classroom...I guess that's progress, they were sitting down at the other end of the school for a good month

I wonder how long those boxes are going to sit there...maybe my students should color on them so they can become hallway artwork.

Classroom

I thought I would upload some pictures of my classroom so you can see what it looks like!  Our rooms always seem to be a work in progress...they change with the seasons, what we're exploring in class, and what works best for the kids.  We usually get it just the way we want it and then it's summer vacation and time to pack it all up again :)
