a little birthday trip to estes

Yesterday we headed to one of our favorite places in the mountains, Estes Park! It's only about 40 minutes from our house and we love to wander along the river, people watching, and enjoying the cooler temperatures from the city.  We decided to take Everdeen to celebrate her 5th birthday and to of course find some special birthday ice cream :)

It was such a beautiful day! Estes was swarming with people, but we were able to find a peaceful and quiet place near the river to eat our lunch and just listen to the rushing river. It was the perfect white noise to help Weston stay asleep in his wrap!

These family outings are everything to me. We haven't been able to do as much this summer with our new little one, so the times we can escape as a family of four are so special.

31 years

I awoke early to Everdeen crawling into our bed. I rearranged the pillows and blankets so she could snuggle in. I looked over at my snoozing husband. He can literally sleep through anything...but this morning Everdeen whispered (loudly) in his ear, "Wake up!" She didn't want him missing anymore of his birthday.  She immediately began to tell him what was waiting in the birthday bag downstairs for him, so much for surprises with a toddler in the house.
Martin wanted to spend the day in the mountains for his special day so we headed to the Shambhala Mountain Center near Red Feather Lakes. I've always wanted to visit and today was the perfect day.

It is beautiful there. Calm, quiet, peaceful. The air was cool, such a drastic change from home just an hour away. The hike to the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya is lined with white flags flapping in the wind...Tibetan prayer flags wrapped around the branches of trees and beautiful places for meditation near trickling streams. It really does take your breath away when it appears suddenly in the middle of nowhere.

When the Stupa came into view Everdeen cried out, "WOW!"  We passed several offerings and the smell of incense filled the mountain air. When we climbed to the top of the stairs we removed our shoes and went inside. A large golden Buddha filled the entire room and the intricate marble floors were cool on our feet.  Everdeen was completely silent as we sat for a few minutes to admire the shrine and take in our surroundings.
It's hard to believe another year has gone by.  This is our 13th year of celebrating birthdays together! I can still remember celebrating our 18th birthdays in high school like it was yesterday...
Happiest of Birthdays to my one and only. May this next year be filled with beautiful adventures, new experiences, and lots and lots of love from your two favorite girls. We love you!

Everdeen is 3!!!

Oh my sweet girl! I don't think I'm ready for this post.  How did three come so fast? I think if I start to write anything I will become a large puddle of sappy tears...so I made you a sappy video instead...:)

We had a little celebration last weekend with our families. Everdeen now thinks because she turned "three" last Saturday that today she is turning "four" and all of her friends will be back! :) I'm glad a year doesn't actually go by that fast!
Today is just about spending the day with my little girl.  Today is her day...we'll watch an extra episode of Curious George, tell her all about her special birthday, eat special birthday pancakes for breakfast and most definitely hold her a little tighter :)

Happy Birthday...to Us!!

My twin sister wrote a beautiful post about what it means to share a birthday with your twin and soul mate :)  I couldn't have written it better myself.  Happiest of Birthdays to my other half!

My twin sister Jessica is my soul mate.  I mean, we were split in two so I'm pretty sure we each have part of the same soul.

The day we headed off to college was one of the saddest days of my life.  I remember laying awake in my tiny bed, in my new dorm room, on my first night and not knowing how to feel or how to be.  How would I make friends without my best friend by my side?  How would I survive class?  How would I go to the grocery store by myself?  Who was going to tell me that my outfit should never see the light of day?

The next years were hard, but we both grew.  We became braver and more independent.  We experienced things the other did not.  We took trips, met friends, got our hearts broken, fell in love and graduated.  The next years were even harder.  I headed off to Texas for graduate school and took a blind leap into the unknown, alone.  I was so used to everyone knowing I was a twin back home that it was a strange feeling for new people in my life to not automatically know this about me.  Our whole life we had been known as "The Twins" which always annoyed me. But here, hundreds of miles away from home, I wished and hoped that just once someone would refer to me as one of "The Twins".

Life has taken us both down different paths and we are happy in our careers and little families.  And even though its been years since we lived in the same state and we've grown accustomed to these separate lives, we miss each other with all of our hearts.  I guess we've become grownups during this time because lets face it, it would have been crazy for us to not have learned how to function in the real world without the other nearby.

But you see, the truth is, even though we are grownups and we live wonderful, independent lives, I just don't function my best without her.

On the rarest of rare days that we can't talk I feel like there is a hole in my day.  Who can I tell that for a brief second after lunch it smelled exactly like the skating rink we used to go to when we were little?  And there's no doubt that she will understand completely---my co-workers at lunch would just look at me weird!  Or what if I have to describe a color and the only description I can come up with is that it is that shimmery color from that one ride in Disney World?  And of course my sister would say, "Oh right! The one with the dragon.  I know that color."

I usually talk to Jessica on my way home from work each evening which can last from 5 minutes to an hour :) .  The minute we say, "hi" a feeling of complete contentment washes over me.

Even living 2000 miles away, our lives are interwoven.  They are forever connected.  You always hear of twin struggles--of those twins who yearn to be their own self and independent of each other.  At least for us, this is impossible.  While we have our own distinct personalties and preferred nail polish color, we are our most true selves when we are together.  We are soul mates.

Oh, hello 30

My twin sister and I are turning 30 on Sunday and I'm just not sure how I feel about it. I wish I had something profound to say about how turning 30 is the new 20 (is it?) and how turning 30 makes you an instantaneous adult (will it?). How you wake up on your 30th birthday and suddenly have everything figured out.  You eat healthy salads for lunch, use wrinkle defying night cream, and deposit a generous amount of your paycheck into your retirement fund. Because 30 year olds are always planning for the future...right?
Sigh...I think the more I dwell on this upcoming birthday the more mid-life crisis-y I get.

I assure you my husband doesn't have to worry about me running out and splurging our entire bank account on a new sports car.  Besides, I already had my moment of splurging today when I went out and bought two new sweaters...from Target...that were on sale...because that's what sensible 30 year olds do.

Everdeen Turns Two {A Little Video}

Happy Birthday little one!

to my sweet girl on her second birthday

To my sweet Everdeen on her second birthday,

Before I had you, I didn't know that such a tiny person could teach me to be a better person everyday. Sometimes as adults we act as, well, adults.  We lose our sense of wonder and our free spirit. I look around me at other parents of young children...the life drained from them.  But you put life into us...seeing the world through your curious and loving heart makes me excited to wake up every morning. You are the most tender of souls, so full of life and happiness.  Your unsolicited hugs and kisses, the way you bring the cats their bowl of food so they can have a snack while you eat yours, the way you move to music, the way you make everyone around you feel special makes our hearts ache from so much sweetness. You have no inhibitions, no callouses...all you know is to love.

I watch you in amazement everyday and still can't comprehend that you are a part of me. It is the most incredible feeling to watch someone grow in front of you...watch them become the person you pray for them to be.  You are a part of me and I am a part of you. What an incredible bond we share.

You are our everything and your daddy and I love you more than anything in this world. How lucky and blessed we are to experience this life with you.

Happy Birthday my sweet sweet girl! Love you love you love you

Love,
Mama

a celebration of two years!

Oh! My little Everdeen is turning two tomorrow!  I don't think I will ever look at birthdays quite the same after having my own baby.  I told Martin that maybe birthdays should coincide with Mother's Day...after all we played a very large role during that special day...no? ;)

Last weekend we held a little party for our sweet girl. We started the celebration at the swimming pool...it was ten o'clock and already way too hot outside.  Everdeen just finished another round of swimming lessons and boy does that girl LOVE to be in the water! That afternoon we had our closest family over for a small get together at my parents' home.  Hotdogs, hamburgers, gold balloons, and an amazing polk-a-dot cake (thank you Nana!)...everything a two year old could want :)
That would be my husband's cup...although he doesn't need to tell me how awesome he is
A new table and chair set for her new big girl room!
Parents of a two year old...eek! We could hardly snatch a picture of Everdeen.  Apparently when you are two, you are much too busy to be bothered to have your picture taken...

this is me at 29

I turned 29 on Saturday :)  My last year of being a twenty-something. It a makes one feel a little nostalgic or leaving you wondering if you're going to accomplish everything you were supposed to before turing 30.
As I got ready for our staff holiday party last weekend I studied myself in the mirror.
This is me.
This is me at 29.

I don't think I feel 29. What is 29 supposed to feel like anyways?  Do I even look 29? My body has changed so much since having Everdeen...everything seems to be much, well, softer. I look tired from our resent bought of sleepless nights and my hair desperately needs to be cut and styled.
I hear little feet toddling down the hallway. Everdeen runs into the bathroom giggling and chasing the cat. I plop her up onto the counter and she rummages through my cosmetics bag watching me apply my makeup and do my hair.  She taps the counter with my mascara like it's a drum stick and squeals "no!" when I try to clip one of her bows in her hair. I slip on my new dress I found at the consignment store and twirl around for Everdeen. She laughs and signs for more.  I simply can not get enough of my little girl!

I pick her up and we stand in front of the mirror together.  She lays her little head on my shoulder and I look again at myself.  Oh! This is who I'm supposed to be at 29 :)

twelve months

this little girl does NOT like bows in her hair :)
Sweet Everdeen, twelve months have flown by in the blink of an eye.  You are blossoming into a little toddler before us!  Your favorite word to say is "daddy" and you say it over and over like a broken record all day long...sometimes in what even sounds like a British accent :) You love to give kisses, wave bye-bye, and smoother the cats with affection.   We are constantly chasing you around and sometimes when you're feeling brave you'll stand on your own for a few seconds! The other day we watched you take a few steps by yourself from the chair to the couch, but we cheered so loudly we startled you and down you went!

You amaze me everyday and I can't wait to see what these next twelve months bring!

Everdeen Turns One {A Little Video}

Happy Birthday Little One!

To My Sweet Girl On Her First Birthday

My Dearest Everdeen,
Today you turn a year old. I know it sounds cliche, but where has the time gone? I've been remembering back to your birthday and what an incredible, life changing, day that was.  I became a mother that day...we became our little family of three.  We had waited for you for so long and you were finally in our arms...calm, pink, and as beautiful as can be.
I can't begin to tell you all of the things I have learned this year.  I know I am a better person because you are here with me and I try each day to be the best mama I can be...although you make it pretty easy!  I would move mountains for you little one and I hope each second of the day you can feel our love for you.

I was trying to picture life before you burst upon us with your little cry and I simply cannot. It's like we've always known you...like you were always a part of me in some form.  This past year I have looked into your amazingly blue eyes and exclaimed that, "You're ours!" "You're really really ours!"  Sometimes I still have to pinch myself.
You have blessed our lives in unimaginable ways.  I truly have never felt love like this and I think sometimes it overwhelms me how much I love you.

Now that you are one, you are beginning to resemble a little lady.  Full of personality, wonderment, and sweet kisses.  I am so excited for this next year and all of the amazing adventures we will have together.
Sweet Everdeen, your daddy and I love you to the moon and back!  Happy Birthday!

Love,
Mama
